1997 Volkswagen GTI becomes world’s fastest GTI at 208 mph (Video)
Going over 200 mph is out of reach to most cars. At this year’s Texas Mile event in U.S. Jeremy Freedman surprised everyone with his 1997 VW GTI. Not the car you’d expect to see next to Lamborghini’s, Porsche’s and tuned Toyota Supra’s.
Powered by the modified VR6 engine with a displacement increased from 2.8 to 3.0-liters and a huge turbocharger this 13 year old GTI produces 800 horsepower!
Other notable upgrades include a new clutch and a limited slip differential. Jeremy also added larger wheels and tires to make sure he can hit 200 mph on the mile.
Not just 200 mph, but he managed to hit 208.1 mph (334 km/h) making it the fastest GTI in the world.
Jeremy’s comment after the race: “It was just raw horsepower and the power-to-weight ratio that got me through it. After 150mph it wasn’t safe. The car was all over the road and I was fighting to keep it straight.”
