1961 Porsche RS61 Spyder can be yours for around $1,500,000

Next Friday(the 12th) Gooding & Company is auctioning a very rare 1961 Porsche RS61 Spyder at the Amelia Island Auction in Florida.

This rare classic Porsche is one of only 14 ever built with a chassis 718-070 featuring 1,678 CC DOHC Air-Cooled Boxer 4-Cylinder Engine that produces approximately 180 hp at 7800 rpm.

The RS61 Spyder was the ultimate evolution of the Porsche Spyder project that began with the legendary 550 Spyder.

The car that hits the auction block next week has an exceptional US Racing History with 13 wins and 20 podium finishes in SCCA National Competition. The list of previous owners is also very impressive. The car was first purchased in the the winter of 1960 by Porsche icon, Bob Holbert of Pennsylvania.

In May 1961 he sold the car to a famed East Coast driver, “Gentleman Tom” Payne. Some time in the mid-1960s, the venerable Porsche was retired from the track and subsequently sold to a Mr. Steadman in 1969.

In 1978, the RS61 was sold to a Mr. Aase who, like Steadman, owned the Porsche sports racer for a decade before parting with it. In 1988, a Mr. Hayes purchased the Spyder and returned it to the track, participating in at least a half dozen vintage races before selling the car in 1993. From there, the RS settled in the collection of Terry Jones, a well-known Southern Californian vintage racer. During his ownership, the car was thoroughly prepared for competition by Porsche guru Al Cadrobbi and competed in several vintage races before it was sold to Warren Eads of Southern California in 1995.

The RS61’s current caretaker acquired the car from Mr. Eads and has spent over a decade with the Spyder. This beautiful RS61 Spyder is expected to sell for around $1,200,000 – $1,500,000 when it hits the auction next Friday. Happy bidding!
